It's time to get back to work!

Wash the dishes, tidy the kitchen, clean up all the wrapping paper, put away the Christmas tree, take down the decorations and clear a space on the table.

It's time to get back to work .-)

How about doing some vocabulary practice?

(This image is from the Flo-Joe site. It's not an International House resource. It is a great place to find some exercises and sample tasks for extra PET practice.)

There are lots of topics.
Why not start with Shopping?

We can talk about it in class in January. See you on January 8th!

Preliminary Writing Part 3 - 100 words

Here is a practice task from Cambridge ESOL to help you think about Writing Part 3.

Read the task:

Now consider these questions to help you think about how you could prepare your answer to the task.

Now use your answers to plan your text. We can write it in full in class on 11 December.
See you then.

Can I? Should we? Will they? Need you?

Modals are really helpful.
You should learn as many of them as you can because you need to be familiar with a number of them for your Cambridge English: Preliminary exam.

Here is a short list of some modals you ought to know.

Let's see how many and how often we can use them in class!

Now it's your turn!

Remember!

Replace ... substitute ... switch ... swap .... change ...

Do you remember our friends "replace" /rɪˈpleɪs/ and "replacement" /rɪˈpleɪsm(ə)nt/ ?

I think one of our example sentences was: "Patrick's smile was replaced by a frown".

The word "replace" comes from "place".
We add the prefix "re" to make the new verb.

Would you like to learn a little more about prefixes and suffixes?

Well, a good place to start might be this video from Cambridge English, available for viewing on that well-known online video sharing site.

(The link will take you to an official Cambridge English resource. It is not an International House resource.)

Watch the video and get thinking about words you know, or come across while studying, which are built up from other words.

See you in class!
